Each stage of the city’s development has a different relationship with the river – the older part of the city has a closer, more sensitive connection to the water. Over time, the role of the river in city life diminished. This was evident in the morphotypes of new developments – the Soviet-era free-planning districts were oriented towards the river, but with their long building volumes, visually separated the river from the deeper-lying built-up part. Industrial areas occupying vast spaces along the water completely isolated access to the river from the rest of the city. Based on this, it is possible to identify iconic morphotypes and narratives of the relationship between the city and the river.
The current city seems to seek a dialogue with the river, but it is partly limited by physical obstacles: streets, unkempt and inaccessible green spaces, abandoned industrial zones, and a lack of paths and infrastructure. As the city expands more intensively and unevenly towards the outskirts, moving away from the river at the same time, the question arises – what if the city were to expand onto/under/over the water? How would the existing city structure then extend?
Selected characteristic morphotypes, located along the river, are transformed – creating a map of symbolic objects illustrated with urbanistic views of that location’s river landscape.

Kiekvienas miesto vystymosi etapas turi skirtingą santykį su upe – kuo senesnė miesto dalis, tuo priėjimas prie vandens yra artimesnis, jautresnis. Laikui bėgant upės vaidmuo miesto gyvenime mažėjo – tai ryškėjo ir naujuose užstatymo morfotipuose – sovietmečio laisvo planavimo rajonai buvo orientuoti į upę, tačiau savo ilgais pastatų tūriais, vizualiai atkirsdavo upę nuo giliau esančios užstatymo dalies. Pramonės teritorijų rajonai, užimdavę didžiulius plotus prie pat vandens, visiškai izoliuodavo likusios miesto dalies priėjimą prie upės. Tuo remiantis galima išskirti ikoniškus morfotipų ir upės santykio naratyvus.
Dabartinis miestas tarsi ieško dialogo su upe, tačiau jį iš dalies riboja fiziniai kliuviniai: gatvės, nesutvarkyti, neįžengiami želdynai, apleistos pramoninės zonos, traukų ir infrastrusktūros paupyje trūkumas. Miestui vis intesnyviau ir padrikiau plečiantis į pakraščius ir tuo pačiu tolstant nuo upės, kyla klausimas – kas jei miestas plėstųsi į / po / ant vandens. Kaip tuomet prasitęstų esama miesto struktūra?
Pasirinkti charakteringi morfotipai, išsidėstę prie upės, transformuojami – kuriamas simbolinių objektų žemėlapis iliustruojamas urbanistiniais tos vietos upėvaizdžiais.
